Naturopathy is based on the belief that the human body has an innate healing ability.   Our Naturopaths seek to embody and to teach women crucial Naturopathic principles of self care. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) teach their clients to use diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and cutting edge natural therapies to enhance their bodies’ ability to ward off and combat disease. NDs view the client as an interrelated system (a whole person), not just a blocked fallopian tube or an abnormal lab value. Naturopathic doctors craft comprehensive wellness plans that blend the best of modern medical science and traditional natural medical approaches to not only address disease, but to also restore health. Our naturopathic doctors may use any number and combination of the following therapies:

  • Botanical Medicine & Supplements
  • Nutrition & Gut Health
  • Movement
  • Environmental Medicine & Detoxification
  • Stress Modification Techniques.

Botanical Medicine & Supplements

Plants have been used as medicine since antiquity. Many pharmaceuticals attempt to imitate plant actions in a chemically altered (therefore patentable) form. Many plant substances are powerful medicines that are safe and effective when used properly. Botanical medicines are not benign and should be administered by a trained professional who is educated on the potential side effects of botanical medicines combined with pharmaceutical prescriptions. Holistic Wellness NDs uses a variety of botanical medicines such as whole plants and extracts from plants in single or combination formulations.

Why Take Supplements?

There are two general reasons to take nutritional supplements:
1) Nutritional supplements act as “food” to boost nutrition.
2) Nutritional supplements act as “medicine” when addressing a specific deficiency or speeding up a specific pathway to address a condition.

Are All Supplements Created Equal?

Sifting through excellent quality supplements, those that have no medicinal value, and those that can actually harm your body is a daunting task. Because supplements are not regulated in the same way pharmaceuticals are, it is important that products be subject to purity and quality controls. Part of our naturopaths’ job is to do this research for our clients. We only recommend high quality science-based nutritional supplements and herbs at Holistic Wellness. Whenever possible, we carry products made by companies that have an environmentally friendly business model. Thankfully, there are several companies making really great supplements.

Environmental Medicine & Detoxification

Our health and that of our children depends on the health of the environment. Environmental medicine examines the relationship between the environment and human health, and the role of the environment in causing or mediating disease.
Today we live in a world where our soil, food, air and water are full of pollutants, toxins, metals, and synthetic hormones. This environmental pollution can have serious consequences on our health. Sometimes our detoxification systems can be overwhelmed. Naturopathic Doctors educate clients on how to decrease exposure and provide solutions that aid the body in safely metabolizing and excreting these harmful substances. This branch of naturopathic medicine is particularly important for couples who are planning on becoming pregnant and for women during menopause.

Nutrition & Gut Health

One of the simplest (and most delicious) steps we can take towards living healthier lives is by enjoying clean, organic, seasonal, local food with those we love.
Clients often ask for resources for good cookbooks, so we keep a running list of our favorites. We’ve referenced these cookbooks that Dr. Naumes uses to make scrumptious and salubrious food for her own family.

Movement

In today’s society, we tend to eat more and move less. Dr. Naumes encourages all clients to play – hike? walk? dance? – outside in the fresh air daily.

Exercise can aid in weight loss, balance hormones, reduce pain, improve mobility, mood and cognition. Dr. Kate creates personalized exercise plans for all clients.

Homeopathy

People often confuse Naturopathy and Homeopathy. They are not interchangeable, though many naturopaths may utilize homeopathy. Homeopathy is a medical system that uses infinitesimal doses of diluted substances from plants, minerals and animals–called remedies–to stimulate a person’s immune and defense system. It is based on the theory that certain diseases can be cured by giving very small doses of drugs which in a healthy person and in a large doses would produce symptoms like those of the disease.
